Land of the chestnut
The chestnut can be found everywhere in the area, as it is very well-suited to and has developed on the acid soil of the Monts de Châlus.
Originally coming from the Mediterranean Basinand probably introduced into Limousin in ancient times, the species thrived significantly from the 16th - 18th centuries, when it was used to produce charcoal for the many smithies in Perigord-Limousin. A specific wood industry grew around coppicing by those working with chestnut (feuillardiers). The fruits of this irreplaceable tree made it possible for generations of peasants to survive when times were bad.
