Although war has been waged a great deal in the Monts de Châlus, there has also been a lot of prayer. Except for Thavaud (Dournazac), not much remains of the priories which, in most cases, marked out the old roads to Perigord and particularly the paths to Compostella.
The parish churches, on the other hand, have survived and all the villages in the Monts de Châlus preserve, at least, a shrine dating from the Middle Ages.

A remarkable collection of medieval churches

Dournazac's Church Dournazac church has preserved its 12th century choir and has been recently restored.

The very simple, but elegant, Romanesque choir of Saint-Nicolas-Courbefy (Bussière-Galant) is also to be admired.

Most of these churches were altered, or even completely rebuilt, after the ravages of the Hundred Years War; such was the case with Bussière-Galant, with its odd strange bell-tower which could have been used as a dwelling; with Lavignac; with Lageyrat; with Pageas with its chestnut shingle bell-tower; and, above all, with Flavignac which was rebuilt and extended in several stages between the mid-15th and the early 16th centuries.

The way to Santiago de Compostella

The area of the Monts de Châlus is crossed by the historic way, or Via Lemovicensis (Limousin Way), from Vezelay.
Already, in the Middle Ages, pilgrims visited the Monts de Châlus - as shown by the gravestones in the church at Lageyrat. The village of Flavignac has set up a refuge for pilgrims.

The sacred springs

St Nicolas Spring The sacred or miraculous springs are places to which processions are made and to which all kinds of curative properties are attributed.

In order to intercede with the saint to whom the spring is dedicated, believers leave things belonging to the sick person (clothes and animal collars etc.). For example, a sacred spring - the Font de Rieu Tari or Font de Saint-Fiacre - can be found in the middle of the Forest of Les Cars and has the quality of being able to cure horned animals. The three sacred springs of Saint Eutrope in Courbefy cure different illnesses : rheumatism and toothache, etc.
